Key Roles and Responsibilities of a T.C.A.G. Combat Advisor/Trainer

A TCAG combat advisor provides hands-on training in combat tactics, command and control staff procedures, battlefield medicine, military engineering, communications, and specialized skills, delivering instruction tailored to frontline operational needs across woodland, urban, and trench environments.

They assess soldier and unit proficiency, give structured, actionable feedback to improve performance, and adapt lessons in real time to evolving battlefield conditions while maintaining a high standard of instruction. Advisors operate alongside Ukrainian units in field environments, coordinate closely with Ukrainian military leadership to ensure training aligns with current combat requirements, and enforce strict operational security and professional conduct at all times.

Minimum qualifications to volunteer with the Tactical Combat Advisory Group (TCAG)

To serve as a military advisor in Ukraine with the Tactical Combat Advisory Group (TCAG), applicants must have prior military service or proven experience in combat operations, training, or leadership. They must demonstrate a high level of tactical knowledge, weapons proficiency, and the ability to instruct, mentor, and work alongside Ukrainian soldiers in both classroom and field conditions. 

Advisors must be between 25 and 55 years of age, physically fit, mentally resilient, and adaptable to austere and high-threat environments. English proficiency is required, and knowledge of Ukrainian or Russian is highly desirable. 

Candidates must exhibit discipline, integrity, and respect for Ukrainian Armed Forces regulations, culture, and command structure. Applicants must possess a valid passport, have no criminal record, complete the TCAG application and vetting process, and be fully self-funded for travel and living expenses, as TCAG operates without pay.

 A minimum on-ground commitment of 90 days is required, with flexibility for longer service depending on mission needs. All advisors are expected to maintain strict operational security (OPSEC), demonstrate professionalism at all times, and serve with humility, respect, and unwavering dedication to strengthening Ukraine’s defense and saving lives through effective training and mentorship.

Ability to adapt training methods to different experience levels and combat environments.

Prior training or instructional experience is preferred but not required.

Strong common sense, problem-solving skills, and the ability to work independently in high-pressure situations.
